Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) is embarking on new and exciting projects in 2017 and we’re looking for energetic team members!
ARIJ has been active for 10 years. It is the only region-wide network in the Arab world exclusively dedicated to advancing investigative journalism (IJ) and to creating a community of support for IJ practitioners in the region and linking them to international peers. To date, we have been supporting the proliferation of investigative journalism in most of the Arab world.
ARIJ’s vision is to advance excellence in investigative journalism with the aim of increasing accountability, transparency and access to information in the Arab world for the public good.

ARIJ is an engaging, energetic and innovative place to work. A team of 12 people, based in Amman, Jordan has accomplished a lot over the last 10 years, but we are looking to do a lot more in the future.
The Program Director is responsible for management, administration, coordination, documentation and reporting on of all aspects of ongoing programs in Jordan and in other locations of ARIJ’s operations. This responsibility includes but is not restricted to planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling program activities.
This is a senior position. Pay and benefits commensurate with experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan the program
Plan the delivery of the overall program and its activities in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization
Develop new initiatives to support the strategic directions of the organization
Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful outcome of the programs
Develop an annual budget and operating plan to support the program
Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the program and to identify areas for improvement
Develop funding proposals for the program to ensure the continuous delivery of services
Write monthly reports on the operation for the Board of Directors and Donors
Follow-up on the registration of ARIJ International
Organize the program
Ensure that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization
Ensure that program activities comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards
Develop forms and records to document program activities
Staff the program
In consultation with the Executive Director & FD, recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff
Implement the human resources policies, procedures and practices of the organization
Ensure that personnel files for the program are properly maintained and kept confidential
Establish and implement a performance management process for all program staff
Engage volunteers for appropriate program activities using established volunteer management practices
Ensure that all program staff receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and the programs.
Lead the program
Ensure all staff members receive orientation and appropriate training in accordance with organizational standards
Supervise program staff by providing direction, input and feedback
Communicate with clients and other stakeholders to gain support for the program and to solicit input to improve the program
Liaise with other managers to ensure the effective and efficient program delivery
Control the program
Write monthly reports on the program for management and for funders
Communicate with funders as outlined in funding agreements
Ensure that the program operates within the approved budget
Monitor and approve all budgeted program expenditures while coordinating with the Finance Director
Monitor cash flow projections and report actual cash flow and variance to the Executive Director on a regular basis (monthly & quarterly)
Ensure financial reports and supporting documentation for funders are prepared as outlined in funding agreements
Provide required information in order to generate invoices/requests and submit to funders according to the established timelines
Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and propose appropriate action to control the risks, with management team and Board
Monitor the program activities on a regular basis and conduct an annual evaluation according to the program evaluation framework
Report evaluation findings to the Executive Director and recommend changes to enhance the program, on a monthly basis
Handle the donors’ comments, requests, and feedback and work to solve any problems.
Touch base with Executive Director (ED) re: the priorities of the day.
Provide/request from the Finance and Administration Director any needed data.
Respond to inquiries from donors, management and employees.
Attend the daily management team
Attend the management team weekly meeting and the weekly all-staff meeting.
Prepare a weekly report about accomplishments of the last week and the plan for the following week.
Monthly report on activities to ARIJ’s Board of Directors & Donors (Draft should be sent to ED for input/approval).
Answer donors’ questions & requests.
Prepare a plan for the coming months.
Alert trainers, consultants & staff about upcoming events.
Monitor cash flow projections and report
Update the indicators, training summaries and other needed records.
Prepare the newsletter / E-newsletter in English, with staff assistance.
Annually / Semi Annually
Prepare for two board meetings & finalize the Minutes of Meetings.
Prepare with Board Chairperson the agenda of the board meetings.
Prepare for annual review meeting with Donors.
Submit narrative/financial reports to the Donors to update them with results, any changes in strategy or budget, activities for coming years.
Ongoing / As Required:
Coordinate external review or donors’ reviews of ARIJ and participate in reviews of donors’ own institutions (as happens throughout the year, formally and informally)
Coordinate the strategic planning process (every 2-3 years)
Research and assess new funding or collaboration opportunities
Respond to requests to assess proposed new activities/partnerships, in consultation with ED and other staff
Write/edit proposals to donors/partners; follow up
Skills & Qualifications
Client groups and funders programs
Fluent in English is a must, followed by Arabic
Working with complex budgets
Report writing/editing and proposal writing
Proficiency in the use of computers for:
Word processing & document sharing
Preferable a Master’s Degree in Project Management, Business Administration, Public Policy or any related field.
At least 10 years of experience in such position roles.
