From Idea to Investigation: ARIJ Webinar Guides Journalists on Crafting Strong Proposals

February 24, 2026

ARIJ Network organized a webinar titled “How to Produce an Investigation with ARIJ: From Idea to Proposal” on Monday, February 16, bringing together more than 50 journalists interested in developing investigative projects with ARIJ.

The session was delivered by ARIJ Executive Editor Ethar Azem, who provided a practical overview of ARIJ’s investigation proposal template. She emphasized that the template is not merely a formality but a core tool for evaluating the strength of an idea, the depth of preliminary research, and the feasibility of pursuing the investigation.

The webinar focused on a central question: What new information will the investigation reveal? Azem stressed the importance of reviewing previously published work, identifying gaps, and conducting solid preliminary research, including engaging affected individuals and relevant officials to clarify responsibilities and dimensions of harm. She highlighted the need to define a clear investigative angle, demonstrate impact, and determine whether the case represents an isolated incident or a recurring pattern.

Azem also underscored that no investigative story stands without credible sources and documented evidence. Proposals must substantiate harm, identify those affected, and establish accountability, supported by relevant documents and materials. All ARIJ-supported investigations undergo rigorous fact-checking and legal review prior to publication to ensure accuracy and credibility.

The session concluded by reaffirming that the proposal template reflects the depth of research, clarity of approach, and a journalist’s readiness to produce a professional investigation with meaningful impact.
