ARIJ Offers a Workshop to Jordanian Journalists with Special Needs on Events Coverage

August 21, 2023

As part of its inclusive approach, ARIJ organised a workshop for journalists with special needs in its Amman office. The workshop titled “Conferences Coverage: New Angles and Approaches,” included 12 male and female journalists with physical, visual, and auditory disabilities.

The training, held on Wednesday and Thursday, August 16th and 17th, was delivered by Safaa Ramahi, Senior Training and Innovation Officer. It focused on direct communication methods with experts in investigative journalism, enhancing their abilities to creatively and diversely cover events like the ARIJ 16th Annual Forum taking place in Amman between 1-3 December, 2023.

Sign language interpreter Tahani Al-Salihin participated in translating this workshop alongside the trainer to maximise accessibility and inclusivity. The workshop content, including audio, visual, written materials, and sign language, will be available on ARIJ Academy.

The workshop’s objectives encompass empowering participants to understand the concepts of investigative journalism, familiarising them with the elements of the ARIJ Conference, and instructing them on innovative and non-traditional event coverage techniques. Emphasis was also placed on the significance of producing in-depth and inspirational journalistic stories.

A discussion focused on “Investigative Reporting Covering Disability Issues,”  a session to be held on December 3rd, in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. During the workshop, the importance of using sensitive language to cover disability matters, reflecting their challenges and successes, will be highlighted.

This training program is the first of its kind in Jordan, meticulously designed to cater to the needs of individuals with disabilities. The training was interactive and practical, providing a Braille training manual and sign language interpretation throughout. This workshop will empower participants and enhance their capabilities in the field of journalistic coverage, particularly in the realm of disability issues.
