ARIJ Reports Win Two Prizes at the 2026 Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards

The video series “Climate and War” won the award in the “Conflict & Climate Change” category at the 2026 Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards. This three-part documentary series exposes the multifaceted climate toll of the war in Gaza. From emissions resulting from bombing to wiped out croplands and the carbon that will one day go into rebuilding Gaza, the films forcefully argue that war is as much an environmental catastrophe as it is a humanitarian one.

The project was produced by Mohammed Sawwaf and Shrouq Aila, with the participation of Salah Al Haw, Mohammed Mortaja, Ahmad Abu Ajwa, Ibrahim Al Otla, Iktimal Al Aila, Hedaa Al Dahdouh, Ahmad Al Shayah, and Mahmoud Al Sarraj.

On this occasion, ARIJ pays tribute to our two courageous colleagues, Ahmed Al Shayah and Mahmoud Al Sarraj, who contributed to this project and lost their lives in the line of duty as journalists.

Furthermore, the multimedia report “Tunisian Beekeepers Taste the Bitter Sting of Climate Change” by journalist Radhia Charaabi won the award in the “Food & Agriculture” category. This report explores the impact of climate change on honey production in Tunisia, detailing how severe drought, extreme heat, and parasites have caused a 15% drop in Tunisian honey production, threatening 13,000 families while exposing a critical lack of government strategy to protect the sector.

The Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards, now in their sixth year, honor excellent reporting on critical dimensions of the climate story.
