Details

On December 2, OSF published an article by ARIJ Director General Rawan Damen titled “The Reporter who Helped Free 1,600 Yemeni Prisoners”. In this article, Damen highlights the immense impact of the “Eternal Hostages” investigation, which was published by Yemeni journalist Wael Sharha on March 9, 2020, The investigation documents how the divergence of legal courts violates the rights of inmates, revealing how a lack of judges, handcuffs and vehicles hinders the process of litigation and the judiciary, thus leaving the prisoners waiting for sentences to be decided and enforced. Following its publication more than 1600 prisoners were released from the Central Prison in the Yemeni governorate of Ibb. The Yemeni Supreme Judicial Council took ARIJ’s investigation into consideration and endorsed filing a disciplinary case against two judges and referred them to the Accountability Council, based on the charges filed against them by the Judicial Inspection Authority.
