Three ARIJ investigations made it to the longlist for the 2026 One World Media Awards. The One World Media Awards recognize the best media coverage from and about the global south.
The three investigations are:
■ “The Gaza Family Torn Apart by IDF Snipers from Chicago and Munich”, by ARIJ, the Guardian, paper trail media, Der Spiegel, ZDF, Der Standard and De Tijd. This five-month investigation has identified the six people shot by Israeli snipers on November 22, 2023. And through interviews with survivors, witnesses and family members, reviews of death certificates, medical records and geolocated images we revealed how a family from Gaza City’s Tal al Hawa neighborhood was torn apart in a few hours by men who grew up in Naperville, Illinois and Munich, Germany.
■ “Destruction of the Largest Embryo Bank in Gaza.. When Military Tanks Target Incubators of Hope” by journalist
Zareefa Abo Qoura. This report documents the destruction of the largest embryo bank in the Gaza Strip, which stored around 90 percent of embryos in the Strip. Our investigation draws on the testimony of people living in the area and women who had their and their husbands’ embryos stored at the center.
■ “Assad Regime Blackmails its Opponents Using Women” Sara Aboshady and Mohamed Tolba. This investigation shows how, between 2011 and 2017, Syrian women and girls were arrested on fabricated charges of terrorism or of being linked to wanted individuals. Other women were held without charge or used either as bargaining chips or as a way to blackmail their families and pressure them to hand over people wanted by the authorities. These female detainees suffered harsh interrogations inside Syrian security centres, and were systematically tortured using electric shocks, beatings, sexual assault, and psychological intimidation to break their will.
