
ARIJ investigation “Caesarean Section in Yemen: Profitable Operations With Fatal Complications” by journalists Munira Al-Tayyar and Mohammad Omar won first place in the 2024 Population and Development Award. The report “From Behind Their Screens: In Yemen, Perpetrators Choose Their Victims from Women with Disabilities” by journalist Eslah Salah secured second place in the award organized by the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) in Yemen.
Journalist Munira Al-Tayyar expressed her pride at winning the award, noting that ARIJ’s support for completing the investigation was not only financial, but also included counseling and psychological support. Journalist Eslah Salah expressed her gratitude for the opportunity provided by ARIJ to work on the report, which spanned a year and documented touching stories and cases.
This “Caesarean Section” investigation reveals that the incidence of caesarean sections in private hospitals in Yemen has been on the increase, and that the reason for the rise is to generate profit for doctors and hospitals and to save them time and effort. But this trends is exposing mothers to the risk of possible fatal complications, while the Ministry of Health remains in denial. While “Behind Their Screens” report sheds light on the rising issue of online sexual extortion targeting women with disabilities in Yemen. It shares heartbreaking cases of victims who, due to their vulnerability, fell into traps of online predators who blackmail them for money or sexual favors.
