“The Gaza Family Torn Apart by IDF Snipers from Chicago and Munich” by ARIJ, The Guardian, Paper Trail Media, Der Spiegel, ZDF, Der Standard, and De Tijd, won the 2026 One World Media Award in the “News” category. The awards celebrate the finest journalism and documentary filmmaking from across the Global South. This year, more than 60 judges from 20 countries have chosen this year’s winners from more than 534 entries.

This five-month investigation by ARIJ, The Guardian, paper trail media, Der Spiegel, ZDF, Der Standard, and De Tijd has identified the six people shot by Israeli snipers on November 22, 2023. Through interviews with survivors, witnesses and family members, reviews of death certificates, medical records and geolocated images we revealed how a family from Gaza City’s Tal al Hawa neighborhood was torn apart in a few hours by men who grew up in Naperville, Illinois and Munich, Germany.

It is worth noting that the report “Destruction of the Largest Embryo Bank in Gaza.. When Military Tanks Target Incubators of Hope” by journalist Zareefa Abo Qoura, was shortlisted for the award. Meanwhile, the investigation “Assad Regime Blackmails its Opponents Using Women“, by journalists Sara Aboshady and Mohamed Tolba, received a special mention in the “Freelance Investigative Journalism” category.
