ARIJ’s investigation “Murder on Mobiles in Sudan” by Sudanese journalist Salma Abdel Aziz won the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Media Award, which is dedicated to celebrating excellence in journalism and media production in the Horn of Africa.
In its second edition, the award highlights peace and security with the overarching theme, “Narratives of Hope: Inspiring Peaceful, Secure, and Inclusive Futures.”
The investigation documents the stories of dozens of girls in the Darfur region of Sudan, who have been murdered, tortured, or beaten by their families, relatives, or people from the same tribe, because they were found with mobile phones in their possession. We also show that the perpetrators have escaped punishment with help from the heads of the Native Administration (a traditional tribally rooted entity that help govern local affairs and disputes primarily in rural areas), or from the families of the victims, on the pretext that the perpetrator is a family member.
