On December 2, Journalist Bilal Sha’ban jointly won the first place in the Egyptian Press Syndicate Award for his “Up in Flames: Egyptian labs and their employees’ lives” investigation published on June 30, 2020. The investigation showed how researchers and workers in the laboratories of Egypt’s Agricultural Ministry work with flammable chemicals, and are exposed to dangerous substances, yet have no health and safety training, nor are they provided suitable protective equipment to prevent injury.
Journalist Samar Medhat jointly won third place in the same competition for her “Egypt’s Corpse less Coffins” investigation published on June 20, 2020. Medhat’s investigation sheds light on an organized crime ring sweeping Egypt, specialized in tampering with life insurance documents and contracts, allowing people to commit death fraud to obtain huge compensation, causing insurance companies financial losses, amid weak oversight from Egypt’s health and interior ministries.
