Details

A report published in April 2022, “Aqaba’s Customs Yards a Punishment for Drivers”, by journalist Safaa Khawaldeh, shed light on the process of custom clearance procedure for the ships arriving at Aqaba port in Jordan.

The procedure, which starts the minute ships get loaded with goods arrive and start unloading their cargo into trucks that head to the designated customs inspection area in Customs Yard 4, could sometimes take a few days to clear the goods. A truck’s first 24 hours wait is free of charge, after that the Aqaba Company for Ports Operation and Management collects storage fees even if the truck driver is not responsible for that delay.

Publishing the repot helped lead the Jordanian costumes’ directorate to develop a procedure allowing for expedited release of goods at Aqaba port in Jordan.

This report was part of “Who is Responsible” training, supported by the UN Democracy Fund.
