“At the Service of the Pentagon: Working in fear.. Some private contractors are accused of abusive labor practices on U.S. military bases”, a cross-border investigation produced by NBC News, ICIJ, ARIJ, and The Washington Post, won the Deadline Club’s 2023 Award for the Business Investigative Reporting category.
The jury commented on the investigation by saying that: “Despite all the difficulties, all institutions participating in the investigation documented violations against workers at the American military bases abroad, and they overcame a series of reported obstacles to shed light on little-known and shocking information that is not circulated at all”.
“Their insistence on telling the story in the face of significant obstacles, and detailing the abuses suffered by workers, which one source called ‘modern slavery’, sets this investigation apart from the other nominees in this category” the jury continued.
This investigation competed with other investigations in the same category: “Going for Broke” by Reuters, and “Uncontrolled Substances” by The Wall Street Journal.
The investigation also won the second place for the online investigative reporting for digital partnerships with other news outlets category, in the 89th edition of the National Headliner Awards in the US, in addition to receiving a special recognition in the Michael A. Dornheim Award as part of the National Press Club’s journalism awards.
