After an ARIJ Investigation: The Libyan Prime Minister Issues Directives to Protect Endangered Wildlife Species

The Libyan Prime Minister, Osama Hammad, has issued directives to the head of the Libyan Hunting and Shooting Authority, Rafee Al-Aribi, regarding the registration of hunting and shooting practitioners and the creation of an accurate database. Additionally, the directives call for the establishment and activation of nature reserves, and the protection of endangered wildlife species that are banned from hunting, in order to preserve environmental balance.

In November 2023, ARIJ published an investigation titled “The Season of Migration into the Nets“, which exposed illegal hunting of migrating European falcons (Saker falcons) in eastern Libya and tracked their smuggling routes from Libya to the Gulf countries.

Previously, the Libyan government issued Decree No. 107 of 2024, which prohibits the hunting of certain wildlife species in areas considered their natural habitats.
