The Central Bank of Egypt has obliged banks across the country to be more exclusive of Egyptians with disabilities through changes in their infrastructure and to take measures that consider people with disabilities as a target customer segment. This comes as an indirect response to the “Falling on Deaf Ears: Nobody Listens to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Egyptian Government Institutions” investigation by journalist Ayat Khairy, which was first published in English on August 23, 2020. The Investigation sheds light on the difficulties deaf and hard of hearing people encounter in government hospitals in Egypt and other institutions due to the absence of sign interpreters.
