The investigation “Visa trade… The “commodification” of free visas at the gates of the Egyptian Consulate in Khartoum” by journalist Haider Abdel Karim won the Mahjoub Mohamed Saleh Award for Sudanese Journalism.

The investigation documents the suffering of Sudanese people in the search for a “free visa”, which usually runs into an unjustified obstruction of the visa procedures within the Egyptian consulate, before the problem is resolved through a third party outside of the official working hours.

The investigation monitored, through photos and videos, security personnel controlling the queues of visitors, on behalf of networks active in selling visas around the consulate, in violation of the Egypt-Sudan Four Freedoms Agreement (signed in 2004).
