This week, Al Jazeera launched an Arabic edition of The Data Journalism Handbook as a part of the channel’s 19th anniversary celebrations.
Initially published in English, following a 48-hour workshop at the 2011 Mozilla Festival, the Data Journalism Handbook is widely recognized as the premier entry point for individuals interested in dabbling with data.
The Handbook draws upon the expertise of more than 70 leading advocates and practitioners of data journalism, including experts from the New York Times, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the BBC, the Chicago Tribune, Deutsche Welle, the Guardian, the Financial Times, La Nación, ProPublica, the Washington Post, the Texas Tribune, Zeit Online, and many others.
Al Jazeera’s Arabic translation is the latest step in an ongoing international effort to make the Handbook’s data lessons more accessible to newsrooms around the world. Previously, the Handbook has also been translated into Russian, Spanish, French and Georgian.
The Arabic translation was spearheaded by Mohammed El Haddad, an online producer for Al Jazeera English, alongside Nada Ahmed, a translation intern, and Ahmed M. Elgoni, a senior translator for Al Jazeera.
All versions of the Handbook are available free of cost online.
