As part of the 18th ARIJ Annual Forum in Amman, ARIJ organized, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Journalism , a two-day, in-person training titled “Debunking Disinformation Digitally: A Practical Training on AI-Assisted Verification”. The training (8 hours) aimed to strengthen journalists’ capacity to detect, verify, and debunk misleading content using practical, AI-assisted verification workflows that improve both speed and accuracy across multiple formats.

The training was led by the Head of Verification at the Norwegian fact-checking organization Faktisk, Silje Førsund, and combined conceptual grounding with hands-on application.

On the first day, participants explored the evolving global landscape of information disorder and examined how AI can both fuel and help counter disinformation. Førsund introduced a step-by-step verification approach and demonstrated AI-supported tools for verifying text, images, and video, including techniques to identify manipulation and deepfake content. The sessions also addressed verification ethics and how to communicate confidence levels when presenting verification conclusions.

The second day was entirely practical and centered on group-based verification sprints. Participants worked in teams on real cases drawn from news and social media, reviewed and validated evidence, and presented their findings. The training concluded with a debrief focused on responsible publication practices, ethical standards, and how to maintain transparency when reporting verification outcomes.

ARIJ & NIJ have been collaborating in training in Jordan for over 12 years.
