“Empowering Journalism: Combating Gender Violence, Hate Speech, and Disinformation”: A Workshop Series by the I Will Not Stay Silent Project

“Empowering  Journalism: Combating Gender Violence, Hate Speech, and Disinformation” is the title of the three-day workshop series hosted by the “I Will Not Stay Silent” project by ARIJ, with the support of the German Embassy in Amman.


On the first day,  Dr. Zahera Harb, International Journalism Cluster lead at City University of London, talked about hate speech, its definition, and some tools, practices, and methods used to confront it. During the workshop, participants worked in separate groups on some examples and models of hate speech and presented and discussed them with Dr. Harb.


On the second day, investigative journalist and coach, Ahmed Ashour focused on some of the tools and methodologies for countering misinformation, and presented a set of examples of digital disinformation campaigns, and dived into the concept of information disorder and its classifications, and the methodology and tools for countering it.


On the third and last day,  executive editor, Hoda Osman, concluded the series of workshops with a training on how to define digital sexual violence, and how to confront it. She also talked about online violence against female journalists, how media should cover violence against women, and presented a set of tips and instructions on conducting interviews with survivors of violence against women. Participants in this workshop worked in separate groups on a number of recommendations to combat digital violence against women.
