We have been on X (Twitter formerly) since November 2010. We enjoyed the journey to meet fantastic colleagues and partners; and engage with them during the last 15 years. Yet, after careful consideration, we have decided to stop posting on X for both our ARIJ and Arab Fact Checkers Network accounts. This decision has not been made lightly, but it reflects our growing concerns over the direction this platform has taken and the implications for our mission, values, and the communities we serve in the Arab world, and worldwide.
We believe in public-interest journalism and the power of storytelling, facts, and dialogue to strengthen societies. Social media once offered a space to amplify those values — connecting us with our beneficiaries and wider audience and community, elevating underrepresented voices, and expanding the reach of important investigations and conversations.
But the landscape has changed.
X has increasingly become a hostile environment for thoughtful discourse, accountability, and truth. The rise of misinformation, unchecked hate speech, and algorithmic prioritization of outrage over accuracy undermines the very principles that guide our work. X has experienced a steep decline in safety standards, content moderation, and transparency — especially since its acquisition by Elon Musk. Under his leadership, the platform has amplified harmful rhetoric, tolerated misinformation, and enabled harassment. We recognize that continuing to maintain a presence on X comes with real costs — to our integrity, our teams, and our audiences. We no longer believe that posting on X meaningfully supports our work or serves our community in the way it once might have.
This doesn’t mean we’re stepping back from digital engagement or public dialogue. We are simply shifting our focus to platforms and tools that better align with our values — where we can foster genuine community, prioritize safety and inclusion, and engage with our audience without compromising on principles.
You can continue to follow our work on our website, through our weekly and monthly newsletters, on other platforms like Bluesky, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube as well as the Facebook closed groups. Most importantly, we invite you to stay in direct touch with us by becoming a member of our growing community on WhatsApp.
Please join one of our other platforms before June 30, 2025 when you will find we have stopped to publish on X.
Thank you for your kind support and for walking alongside us as we take a stand for a more transparent and accountable information landscape.
