ARIJ Hosts Insightful Webinar on Editing Investigative Reports

May 15, 2025

Amman — ARIJ recently hosted a webinar titled “Editing Investigative Reports: From Draft to Publication,” on Monday, April 14, with the participation of 80 journalists from across the Arab region—59% of whom were women. The session offered in-depth guidance on the editorial process and its critical role in producing high-impact investigative journalism.

The session was led by senior editor and coach Firas Taweel, with moderation by executive editor Ibrahim Hamadah. Together, they delved into how thoughtful and rigorous editing can enhance the clarity, credibility, and ethical integrity of investigative journalism.

Speakers shed light on the unique challenges editors face when working alongside investigative reporters, underscoring the need for constructive feedback and a clear editorial vision to bring compelling stories to life.

The webinar also tackled common pitfalls in editing, including:

  • Flowery or rhetorical writing that weakens the story.
  • Poor structure caused by a lack of reading and preparation.
  • Emotional bias undermines objectivity.
  • Flattery at the expense of truth.
  • Reliance on clichés and overly formal language.

Among the key advice shared with attendees:

  • Start with a powerful, human-centered scene to immediately draw the reader in.
  • Don’t let months of work result in a report that still feels like a draft.
  • Avoid overusing quotes—focus instead on analysis and clear storytelling.
  • Ensure every line advances the story and leaves no question unanswered.
  • Remember: your reader does not know what you know—build the story with clarity.
  • Above all, test for readability: would a friend want to listen to this all the way through?

This session is part of ARIJ’s broader efforts to build the editorial capacities of journalists and editors in the Arab region and ensure they are equipped to publish investigations that drive accountability and justice
